A Conversation with SmartICE
Climate change is transforming environments around the world, but nowhere faster than in Canada’s North and Indigenous communities. SmartICE is a community-oriented organization offering a climate change adaptation tool, designed to incorporate sea-ice monitoring data with local Indigenous knowledge of sea ice conditions, which can contribute to more informed decisions regarding land, water, and sea ice use. Indigenous youth are hired to support the manufacturing and maintenance of SmartICE’s monitoring devices in northern communities, and by augmenting Indigenous knowledge and supporting traditional sea-ice use, SmartICE helps to support Indigenous culture and intergenerational teaching and community building. SmartICE has operations in Nain (Nunatsiavut) and Pond Inlet (Nunavut), monitoring equipment established in 17 communities across the Inuit Nunangat and is rapidly expanding. Carolann HardingExecutive Director, SmartICE Sea Ice Monitoring & Information Inc.Carolann brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the world of business development and growth. A dynamic leader and team player, she thrives on creativity, problem solving, collaboration and engagement. Carolann is leading a coast to coast to coast powerful award winning team at SmartICE, a social enterprise, to meet its social mandate and growth plans for the future. Carolann is a graduate from both Memorial and Dalhousie Universities. In 1990, Carolann was named the Youth Entrepreneur of the Year for NL and in 2002 won a Public Service Award of Excellence form the Provincial Government. In March 2014, Carolann received a World of Difference 100 Award presented by The International Alliance of Women (TIAW).

Shawna DickerBusiness Development Intern, SmartICE Sea Ice Monitoring & Information Inc.Shawna Dicker is a fourth year Business Administration student at Memorial University from Nain, Newfoundland and Labrador. Shawna is a part-time Business Development Intern at SmartICE and serves on the Youth Advisory Committee for the National Conversations on Gender Equality project with Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada and the National Inuit Youth Council. She is an environmental, youth, and equality advocate and loves to be outdoors on the land.
