The Regatta: Register to Support Community Youth
The Jilàsi for Youth Regatta is an opportunity for the community of sailors to step forward and contribute to the continuing successful impact of the Broad Reach Foundation for Youth.
Everyone who owns a boat, or crews a boat, knows the value of sailing. That value is important to all of us, but even more so to those disadvantaged youth who have never stepped aboard a boat before, never learned the value of team work, and never enjoyed the satisfaction of good work in a setting of beauty, challenge, and inspiration – with good people.
Register your support and your participation in a Regatta where results extend far beyond the community of sailors; and the purpose is to honour the generosity of sailors, the enduring value of Broad Reach, and the potential of all the youth including those who step aboard our vessels.
As an exquisite 1966 Rhodes Offshore 40, Jilàsi has been restored with a care, consideration and thoughtfulness that has returned her to a state of beauty finer than when she was first launched. Jilàsi is a superb vessel that commands the attention, recognition and admiration of sailors of all stripes.
Jilàsi is an extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime gift that represents how great the generosity of sailors can be, and how much community benefit that generosity can create.
The Broad Reach Foundation partners with 40 community agencies in the GTA, including C.A.M.H., Epilepsy Toronto, The 519, the Native Canadian Centre, LOFT, and Youth Assisting Youth. From these agencies, come the youth who participate in our Summer Afloat Program. Many of the youth are from disadvantaged circumstances: homeless shelters, vulnerable neighbourhoods and drop-in centres. Our Summer Afloat Program is completely free of charge, and 89 cents from every dollar raised goes directly to the program.
In 2017, we introduced almost 400 of these disadvantaged youth to the experience of sailing, thanks to the generosity of 25 volunteers and 7 vessels. Stepping aboard one of these boats brings a whole new world of challenges to everyone who participates, and a whole new world of opportunities and results that last, far beyond the experience of sailing: renewed self-confidence, esteem, a discovery of new capabilities, and a sense that the horizon of possibilities extends far beyond the street.
2017 was our strongest year ever, but our goal is to reach more youth in 2018.
