The Arctic Circle Arch is on the most southerly part of the Arctic Circle. This is where the sun can be down for more than 24 hours on December 21st and up for more than 24 hours on June 21st. In 2015 the town restored its traditional name of Naujaat. Previously, the area was known as Repulse Bay. Most people believe this name came from when Christopher Middleton discovered the bay trying to get out of Hudson’s Bay, but then found out it was just a bay and didn’t take him out, so he was repulsed by it. But, some people believe this name came from a ship called Repulse that discovered the bay. Here you will also find the Naujan Thule Site, a short hike from the community. Here, there have been discoveries dating back to 2500 BC and there remains circular stone houses, made from whale jaw bones, ribs and sod.
