Joining PEI and New Brunswick, this 12.9 kilometre bridge is the longest in the world over ice-covered water. It is also one of Canada’s greatest engineering achievements in the 20th century. The decision to build this bridge was debated among the residents of PEI and it was eventually voted on with almost 60% of the turnout wanting the bridge built. It took 4 years to complete construction and eventually opened to the public on May 31st, 1997.
