Mittimatalik means the “Place where Matima is buried,” however no one knows for certain who Matima is. When Explorers searching for the Northwest Passage arrived at Pond Inlet, they brought with them many new items and the explorers used these items to trade with the locals. One of the most important trade materials they had was the wood from their ships as trees cannot grow here. In 1987, a Inuit Theatre Group was formed and they have been writing and performing plays since then. Inuit language, culture, legends, myths, and wisdom from the elders are important to the play production.
