Meaning the “Place of glaciers” this park is located on Bylot Island and there are 16 glaciers and mountains. Sirmilik has a bird sanctuary Borden Peninsula, Oliver Sound and Baillarge Bay. As well as birds, this island also has many fish, seals, narwhals, whales, and caribou which has sustained the Inuit over the past thousand years. The area was explored by European explorers in the 1600s in their attempt to find the Northwest Passage. The Byam Martin Mountains are near the park and are the one of the mountain ranges located furthest north. The peak, located near the center of Bylot Island is Angilaaq Mountain which is about 6000 meters high. The first expedition to climb the mountain was in 1939 by Pat Baird.
