Completed in 1972, the TS Playfair was purpose built to be a sail training vessel for Canadian youth. The Playfair was launched from Kingston in 1973 and commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II, remaining the only Canadian ship to be commissioned by a reigning monarch. The 72 ft brigantine is owned and operated by Brigs Youth Sail Training, who run programs throughout the summer taking on trainees aged 13-18 for voyages around the Great Lakes. While Playfair’s home port is on Lake Ontario, the ship and its youth crew can be seen sailing in Lake Erie, Lake Huron and Georgian Bay each summer!
